Smart locks for Brisbane homes, minus the hype

A good smart lock is a convenience upgrade, not a security upgrade. The lock is only as strong as the deadbolt behind it and the door it's screwed to. Get those right first, then pick the smart layer that suits how your household actually comes and goes.

Start with the door, not the app

Smart locks inherit the strength of the door and frame they're fitted to. A hollow door with a short strike plate stays weak no matter what electronics sit on it. Before spending on smarts, make sure the mechanical bones, deadbolt, strike, hinges, are worth automating.

Entering a code on a smart door lock

The four questions that pick the lock

Answer these and the shortlist mostly picks itself.

  • Who needs access? Codes for family, temporary codes for cleaners and trades, or app access for everyone.
  • What happens when the battery dies? Prefer a mechanical key override or an external charging contact.
  • Does it fit your door? Australian door preps vary, and some imported locks assume ones we don't use.
  • Where does the lock live? Coastal air and afternoon sun age cheap finishes and electronics fast.

When the honest answer is a normal lock

Renters, doors that see brutal weather, and households that just want the door locked at night are often better served by a quality mechanical deadbolt and a couple of well-cut spares. It's cheaper, there's nothing to charge, and nothing to update.

If the smart route is right for you, have it fitted properly. A smart lock installed with a sagging door or misaligned strike will chew batteries and drop offline, and the app gets blamed for a carpentry problem.
