Locksmith The Gap

The Gap sits about 23 minutes from our Brendale workshop, out along Waterworks Road, the far end of our north-west run. The van covers it during shop hours, and it's close enough that walking into the shop is often the cheaper move.

Car locksmith and house key work in The Gap

What we do for the Hills District.

Why The Gap calls a locksmith

The Gap went from farmland to a full suburb in barely a decade, its strongest growth packed between 1954 and 1966, and it has hardly let go since: 38.8% of homes are owned outright and only 15.2% rented, so the locks out here often stay in the same family's hands until a barrel finally wears out. That flips the usual locksmith story. In rental suburbs the work is churn, a rekey every time a lease turns over; in The Gap it's upkeep, worn original hardware in houses that often haven't changed hands in decades, and a proper rekey when a long-held place finally sells. With 92.0% of dwellings separate houses and an average of two cars in the driveway, the jobs split cleanly between house hardware and car keys, and both can be handled from the counter or the van depending on what travels.

Housing here arrived in one burst. The Gap was farmland holding 67 residents in 1911; by 2011 it was home to nearly 16,000, with most of that growth packed into the twelve years from 1954 to 1966. A suburb built in a single era ages in a single era. Locksets, garage side-door locks and patio slider catches fitted through that boom, or their first replacements, are now decades into daily service, and many of their hardware lines are discontinued. When one gives out, the real question is whether the rest of the house should come onto one key at the same time.

Tenure shapes the work as much as age. With 38.8% of dwellings owned outright, 44.8% owned with a mortgage and just 15.2% rented, The Gap sees far less between-tenant rekeying than the rental suburbs where that work dominates. Demand out here is owner-driven: a full rekey when a long-held house sells, worn barrels serviced properly rather than patched for the next lease, and key-alike jobs that put the front door, garage and slider on one key. And with 92.0% of dwellings separate houses, the work is house hardware, entry sets, sliders and window locks, not unit-block barrels.

The driveways carry the other half of the trade. The Gap's households are 83.0% family households, averaging 2.9 people and two motor vehicles per dwelling. Car keys are the most mentioned topic across our Google reviews, ahead of fair pricing. Two cars usually means several keys in circulation per house, and the cheap move is a spare cut or decoded at the counter before the last one disappears. One reviewer was quoted $40 for a key cut elsewhere and paid $15 here.

One pocket runs against the grain: the newer estates around Leavitt Road, where Brisbane City Council approved the initial stages of Cedar Woods' 980-home development in 2014. Homes there tend to hand over with builder-standard, sometimes keyed-alike locks, so the typical job is a move-in rekey or hardware upgrade, the opposite end of the story from the 1960s streets.

Distance decides how the work gets done. The Gap is the far end of our north-west run, out along Waterworks Road, roughly 23 minutes from the Brendale shop, so the counter-or-van question deserves an honest answer. So here it is straight: one reviewer was told to come in rather than pay a call-out fee, another described leaving the counter 'within 10 minutes with exactly what was required', and when the job can't travel the van covers The Gap and Upper Kedron inside weekday hours.

Common lock and key problems in The Gap

A worn barrel or sticking lock in a boom-era house

Most of The Gap went up between 1954 and 1966, so original or first-replacement locksets have been in daily service for decades and many of their hardware lines are discontinued. We service or rekey worn barrels where possible and supply and fit replacement house lock hardware when the old line is past saving; a removable barrel can travel to the Brendale bench instead of paying for the van.

Rekeying a long-held house when it finally changes hands

With 38.8% of homes owned outright and only 15.2% rented, houses in The Gap sell rarely, and a sale can end decades of keys drifting to family, neighbours and trades. A settlement rekey puts every external door on fresh keys, and key-alike work can bring the whole house onto one key in the same visit.

One lost car key away from a stranded car

Dwellings in The Gap average two motor vehicles each, and 83.0% of households are family households, so most homes here run several car keys at once. We cut and decode car keys, including from code, plus batteries, shells, barrel and ignition work; ABC Locksmiths is an RACQ approved repairer in the locksmith category.

A dealer quote that feels steep, or a flat refusal

Phone the shop before booking a dealership; the bench also covers motorcycle keys and barrels, including spares recut after another locksmith couldn't.

Builder-standard locks in the newer Leavitt Road estates

Brisbane City Council approved the initial stages of Cedar Woods' 980-home development off Leavitt Road in 2014, adding a pocket of newer housing to an otherwise mature suburb. A move-in rekey or lock upgrade puts the new place on your keys only; we'll advise over the phone whether it's a van job or the barrels can come to the counter.

Paying for a van visit when the counter would've been cheaper

The Gap is the far end of our north-west run, about 23 minutes out along Waterworks Road. One reviewer was told to come into the shop rather than pay a call-out fee, and another described leaving 'within 10 minutes with exactly what was required'.

Mobile locksmith service in The Gap, or you to the counter

Here's how to pick between them.

The cheap way and the convenient way both work from The Gap. Cheap: bring the key or lock to the Brendale counter and pay bench prices with no call-out fee. Convenient: the van comes to you.

Rekeys after a move and dead car keys are both work we take from here. Ask for the price before the work starts.

Same run: Upper Kedron

The van run to The Gap takes in Upper Kedron on the same terms: priced on the phone before the van leaves Brendale.

Common questions

Is it worth driving from The Gap to your Brendale shop, or should I book the van?

Depends what's broken. The counter is about 23 minutes from most of The Gap, out along Waterworks Road, and anything that travels, keys, fobs, a removable barrel, is usually the cheaper job there. One reviewer was told to come in rather than pay a call-out fee. Doors that won't lock and whole-house rekeys need the van.

What does a locksmith call-out to The Gap cost?

We quote by phone before anyone travels, because a fair answer depends on the job. Counter work runs cheaper: one reviewer paid $15 for a key cut quoted at $40 elsewhere. Call 07 3205 4925 and describe the job for a straight figure.

Can you put our whole house on one key?

Yes, rekeying and key-alike work are core services. In The Gap, where 92.0% of dwellings are separate houses, the front door, garage side door and patio slider have often ended up on different keys after decades of piecemeal replacement. Count your external doors before ringing and we'll steer you on scope and price over the phone.

We've just bought a long-held house in The Gap. Should we rekey?

It's the sensible default. In a suburb where 38.8% of homes are owned outright and only 15.2% are rented, a house can carry decades of key history, family, neighbours and trades, that nobody can reconstruct at settlement. A rekey of the external doors puts the place on fresh keys, and worn boom-era barrels can be assessed in the same visit.

Do you cover Upper Kedron too?

Yes. Upper Kedron sits on the same north-west van run as The Gap, so a van booking covers both, and anyone can use the Brendale counter. We're weekday only: Mon to Thu 8:00am to 4:45pm, Fri 8:00am to 4:30pm, closed weekends.

The house is in one of the newer estates off Leavitt Road. Is lock work different there?

Usually it's the opposite problem to the rest of The Gap. Rather than worn 1960s hardware, newer estate homes commonly hand over with builder-standard, sometimes keyed-alike locks, and construction-stage key control is hard to verify. A move-in rekey or an upgrade to better hardware is the typical job; phone first and we'll tell you whether the barrels can travel to the counter.

Can you make a car key when the dealer can't?

Often, yes. We cut and decode car keys, including from code, and ABC Locksmiths is an RACQ approved repairer in the locksmith category.
